NOT ALL
MATCHA IS
Equal.

Here's why ceremonial grade changes everything.

Ceremonial
Urasense — vivid jade green

Culinary
Generic — dull olive

The Upgrade
Urasense Ceremonial
Culinary Generic
Color
Vivid Jade Green
Dense chlorophyll from shade-grown leaves — the color is the quality signal. If it's not this green, it's not this good.
color
Color
Dull Olive
Oxidized, sun-exposed leaves — pale color directly signals lower antioxidant content and lower grade.
Harvest
First Flush
Spring Only
Hand-picked from the youngest, most tender leaves — peak L-theanine, peak sweetness, zero bitterness.
harvest
Harvest
Late Season
Machine Cut
Older, tougher leaves harvested for volume — more stems, more bitterness, less of everything you're paying for.
Growing Method
Shade-Grown
3–4 Weeks
Blocking sunlight forces the plant to produce more chlorophyll and amino acids. That stress is your umami flavor.
grow
Growing Method
Full Sun
Exposure
No shade canopy — leaves grow fast but thin on nutrients. Harsh, bitter taste people assume is "just matcha." It's not.
Taste
Smooth, Sweet
Umami-Rich
Naturally sweet with deep savory notes. No bitterness, no astringency. Clean straight or in a latte — no sweetener needed.
taste
Taste
Bitter, Harsh
One-Note
"Matcha tastes like grass" — that's culinary grade. Needs heavy sweeteners to be drinkable. Masks rather than elevates.
Best For
Everything.
Drinks to Desserts.
Complex enough to drink straight. Vivid enough to carry through butter, cream, and sugar in any recipe without fading.
use
Best For
Baking Only
(hidden in batter)
Fine buried in sugar and butter. Disappointing as a drink. The dull color won't produce the vivid green you see on TikTok.

// The founder's obsession

MATCHA DIDN'T
JUST BECOME
MY DRINK.
IT BECAME MY CRAFT.

I didn't start Urasense because I wanted to sell matcha. I started it because I couldn't find a ceremonial grade good enough for what I was making.

My matcha desserts aren't an afterthought — they're where I discovered the difference quality makes. Making matcha thumbprint cookies, matcha soft serve, matcha tiramisu — the color has to be right. The flavor has to carry through butter, cream, and sugar without disappearing. Culinary grade fails every time. The color goes army green. The flavor goes bitter.

"I needed ceremonial grade for everything I made. So I sourced it straight from Japan — and Urasense was born."

Urasense. Ur essence. Matcha is part of my essence — in my cup every morning, in my kitchen every weekend. This isn't a product I sell. It's a standard I keep.

// What I make with it

CEREMONIAL DOES THIS.
Culinary can't.

🍪
Matcha Thumbprint Cookies
That vivid green center that stops people mid-scroll? That's ceremonial grade. Culinary turns brown in the oven.
Ceremonial holds color under heat
🍦
Matcha Soft Serve
The flavor has to hold against dairy without going bitter. Ceremonial is the only way to get that clean, bright finish.
No bitterness in cold applications
🍰
Matcha Tiramisu
Layered through mascarpone and cream, the flavor needs to be assertive but not harsh. Ceremonial grade is that balance.
Complex flavor survives layering
🧋
Ceremonial Latte
Straight in oat milk. No sweetener needed. The natural sweetness of first-harvest leaves does the work on its own.
Naturally sweet — no sugar required
🍡
Matcha Mochi
The chewy texture needs a matcha fine enough to fully incorporate. Our stone-ground powder blends flawlessly — silky smooth.
Ultra-fine grind, zero clumping
🎂
Matcha Layer Cake
Green that actually looks green. Flavor that actually tastes like matcha. Ceremonial makes the cut. Culinary doesn't.
Vivid color survives baking
